Gibraltar Reserve Wildlife Refuge

 

Location:   

Eastern slopes of Gibraltar Range, Northern Rivers, New South Wales, Australia

Altitude:    140-240 metres

Adjacent to Gibraltar Range & Washpool National Parks, New England Tablelands. Approximately 100km west of the coast at Yamba. The Mann River passes about 6km east of the reserve.

 

Description:

Established and gazetted as a Wildlife Refuge in 2004, 188 hectares of mixed Eucalypt & Rainforest, and grassland is protected, from deforestation and grazing of livestock in the rainforest and creeks.

Several kilometers of stream provides wetland habitat, ensuring a diverse mix of species and high conservation value. There is sustainable light production of bushfoods and vegetables.

Over 180 species of bird have been recorded on the reserve.

Conservation Values:

19 species of bird are recorded under the NSW Threatened Species Act, those seen regularly include:

Glossy Black-cockatoo   

Little Lorikeet

Little Eagle

Scarlet Robin

Flame Robin

Wompoo Fruit-dove

Rose-crowned Fruit-dove

 

Research:

Ongoing surveys & monitoring, including;    Rainforest regeneration & bird surveys, planning of Bird banding project & Fauna survey, monitoring of Koala population.

Land Management includes;    Riparian management, Pest species management including Dingo/Wild Dog monitoring, Fire management & fuel monitoring.
